Happy October 1st.
The first Friday of the month means it's time for a giveaway.
(Article. Adjective. Noun. Preposition. Article. Noun. Verb. Noun. Noun. Preposition. Article. Noun.)
Lately, my life teaching the 8th grade is diagramming sentences.
I find myself identifying the parts of speech all day - even when I'm not directly teaching it.
The kids think I'm crazy that I find this stuff "fun."
I tell them that it hasn't always been fun, and how hard it was for me to grasp on to grammar when I was their age.
I even shared the story about how one night while working on grammar homework for Mrs. Westrate, my mom called her because I just didn't get it. Talk about embarrassing.
(I remember lots of tears and lots of yelling)
Anyway, things are much better in the grammar department.
Alright, now for the giveaway.
The necklace, "Come Find Me" is up for grabs this month.
How To Enter:
Leave a comment below saying one thing you remember about English class in Middle School or High School.
It's that simple.
Well, unless you don't remember ANYTHING from English. Then we need to talk! :-)
The giveaway will end Sunday October 3rd.
I think I'll have my 7th period class choose the winner on Monday.
Good luck!
Reading Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock. Still don't get it, but still think it's beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI remember one of the funniest moments in my highschool English Class: Each student had to read a section of shakespeare outloud... and my boyfriend walked over to me to recite his phrase. Everyone was expecting him to come over to me, but at the last minute he swung around and got on one knee to swoon our older teacher!
ReplyDeleteI remember my senior year in english class we had to do an oral report, I have always been extremely shy, and didn't want to do it so played hooky for an entire week (I had the written part of the report all done) figuring I wouldn't have to do the report if I was gone long enough.......my first day back the teacher made me do it the very first thing.....I got an A, but hated every minute of it
ReplyDeleteI remember my middle school English teacher, Mrs. Canton. She actually made learning grammer FUN! Up until I had her I hated English.

I love this necklace!!! Thanks so much for the opportunity! Okay, "diagramming sentences" brings back this memory: My 7th grade English teacher, Mrs. Hughes, taught us how to diagram sentences. I mean, it seemed like we spent weeks on diagramming! The only thing I remember about Mrs. Hughes besides diagramming is that she had two skirts just alike, one khaki and one navy, that she alternated wearing every other day. These were below-the-knee skirts with huge buttons all across the waistbands! Weird! I can still remember how I would look at those skirts and wonder, "Why?!"
ReplyDeleteI remember failing Mr. Winchester's comma test in 7th grade. I failed because I don't think he taught us about comma's - he just gave us a test on it!!! I am still horrible with commas!!
ReplyDeleteI remember one year in Jr. High I had an English teacher who basically took the "day off" every Friday and just had us play scrabble with each other. Lazy, huh?
ReplyDeleteReally nice necklace, thank you for the chance.

I remember when Mrs. Dempski gave me the highest grade (an A!) on the BIG research paper we had to do about themes in Macbeth my senior year. I was sooooo proud of myself, and realized my potential in the subject. I totally rocked that essay :)
ReplyDeleteI loved English class and actually loved diagraming sentences,(probably would need to review it now after all these years) I remember in high school our teacher asked us to write down what grade we deserved on our report card. I knew I was getting an A, so thought I would be polite so he didn't think I was over confident, and wrote down a B+. I couldn't believe my eyes when that is the grade he actually gave me on my report card!!! Learned my lesson from that point -to never undermine who or what I think I deserve:)
ReplyDeleteI remember one of my high school English teachers was also the Russian language teacher. In his class, I was the only one who enjoyed reading Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd.

Hey! Love the necklace! (This is Andrea, just in case the blog name doesn't work)
ReplyDeleteEnglish... my memory isn't that great in that area but I do remember Senior English class... you know when you are doing things in school that you think are absolutely useless, and many are, however, when doing a research paper we were instructed on how to make note cards to help when citing our final draft. Although this seems like an endless and tedious task... Freshman year of college I was the only person in my English class that had any clue as to how to do it! Made me feel pretty smart!
So to Ms. Bodenburg's middle school English class.... take her class as an opportunity to soak in everything! Do your best to remember it all because there may be an opportunity to knock the socks off people with your mad English skills!
A panacea is like a giant band aid. (That's from Mrs. Fitz in 7th grade)
ReplyDeleteI missed alot of school, due to farming, but one of the biggest thing I remember in Mr. Chell's English class in high-school was one day these two guys were reading a play, and another guy went to laughing and one of the one's reading picked up a desk and throwed at him! Of course I remember alot of things I learned, but that was so funny to me!

I remember being excited everytime I got a new English book and going through it and reading all of the stories and poems within a the first week or two.
ReplyDeleteI almost failed my sophomore year of English. The teacher tried to make me play a man in a skit we had to. If he would have just found a woman character for me to be I would have gotten all A's that year... luckily my English grade was high enough the skit only brought it down to a d instead of an f

Ohhhh Lord! I can vividly remember working and working and working SO hard to diagram those STUPID sentences for my English class and being so frustrated! My mom loved that homework and kept looking over my shoulder so excited about it! I can totally empathize with your students when they look at you like you're crazy for saying "it's fun!" It wasn't then, and I don't think it would be to me now. You're a special one Tyne (and mom) :) Miss you!
ReplyDeleteP.S. I love your necklaces Tyne :)
ReplyDeleteI remember having to write reports ALL the time, but since our mom had been a writer, my sisters & I would go to her to correct our papers & papers they come back w/tons of corrections.
